Cannot get Lightcrafter to boot up

We just purchased a Lightcrafter EVM and the device will not boot up. It is stuck at what appears to the end of the initialization process and is hung. I want to note that this is booting off the NAND after taking it out of the box. Why was it shipped with non-functional firmware?

Anyways, any help on getting the device up and running is greatly appreciated. I have tried to load a new firmware image onto an SD card, but that also produces the same result after using the provided lcr_boot tool, setting SW2 towards the SD card slot, and loading the card. I will note that the card is an 8GB SDHC card which is all that I could scrounge up because that is the pervasive format now. What is my best bet to move forward? Do I need to somehow find a non-HC SD card to use?

I have a serial cable coming in this week to take a look at the UART output, so unfortunately I cannot report on what that is saying.

Thanks.

  • Hi Eric,

Can you please read our FAQ on this topic? Once you've tried the items listed and if it still doesn't work, let me know: e2e.ti.com/.../3406.boots-to-95-and-gets-stuck

Most of the time, a power supply with a higher current rating solves this problem. The FW should be okay.

  • Hi Paul,

Thanks for the reply. Going through the FAQ:

    1.  I'm using a 100W 60V/5A rating, its a BK Precision 9110 to be specific. I've got the voltage set to 5V with a max current of 3A.

    2. I've unplugged all peripherals

    3. D3 is not active currently, D2 appears to be and it is solid green.

    4. I've removed the SD card I was attempting to use before and made sure to switch S2 into the correct position, away from the SD card slot. Still no luck.

    5.  Next trying to boot off my SD card (Transcend 8GB SDHC, Class 4) with the latest firmware (v.5) results in the same thing. Stuck at the very end of the boot process. I also attempted to load the SD card with the NAND build just to see if it could at least complete the boot, no good.

    6. I'm not sure that either of these apply to my situation because I cannot get the module to boot sucessfully at all.

    7. If the UART log is the next step, I won't be able to record this until Thursday when my cable arrives.

    Thanks,

    -Eric

  • Thanks Eric for working through those - it helps us a lot with the debug process. I went back through some testing notes and found that the Lightcrafter doesn't appear to support the SDHC standard very well.

If you can find a different SD card, preferably something not SDHC and try that, you should have success. Other users have reported success with some manufacturer's SDHC cards and no success with others.

I'm sorry that you're experiencing these difficulties right out of the box. Hopefully we can get them resolved for you.

    Thanks,
    Paul
  • Good news, I was able to find a non-SDHC card. Loaded it up with the SD card image and I believe it has booted properly. I'm now seeing D1 blink from red to green and the projector is displaying an image with red, green, and blue bars. When I connected it through USB to my computer Windows appears to be installing the appropriate driver. I think I'm good to go now. I'm going to proceed to updating the rest of the system firmware. Thank you for the help.
  • Fantastic! The colored bars are what you should be seeing. Glad that the non-SDHC card did the trick.
