Converting 9" DLP HDTV from 1080P to 4K UHD with me DMD / DLP chip

Greetings. I repair blown capacitors, etc. on the motherboards of Mitsubishi DLP HDTV's. Started as a hobby at age 50. Now at age 52 I am getting pretty good and hungry for more lessons learned by doing.

I have a 92" Mitsubishi DLP HDTV myself, my third and largest one to date. A client has challenged me to see if I can replace the 1080P DMD / DLP chip with a new 4K UHP DMD / DLDP chip, essentially converting it to a tru 4K UHD TV. If so, he will pay me to do the same to his.

My goal is to turn this into my retirement business for me and my wife.

Can this be done through TI?

Can I purchase one to try on mine to test the application?

  • Hi Robert,

Welcome to the DLP Forums and thank you for your question.

Unfortunately it is not a simple matter to replace the 1080P DMD with a 4K DMD. These devices have different controller ICs and pin-outs. This means that to replace the 1080p device in the TV, you would have to design and fabricate a new PCB for a controller board as well as new hardware for mounting the DMD.

Right now we do not sell the 4K DMD as a catalog device on the web or in single units.

I wish you the best of luck on your projects, sorry there is no simple solution.

    Thanks,
    Paul
  • Hi Paul. Thank you for taking the time to reply to me.

Do you happen to know any one or any organization or perhaps even an existing bulk customer of yours that buys enough from you that I might be able to,commission to work with me on doing as you have suggested?

Or how much bulk would I have to buy to launch the project on my own, including building the PCB? Could it be as simple as redesigning or modifying the current one, essentially retrofitting it to perform the intended purpose?

I was thinking of seeing if Mitsubishi-tv would have any interest, but with their current oil and gas initiative, I doubted their interest and decided to reach out to you folks.

    Thank you.

  • I'm not sure if my attempt to send my reply made it to you. My internet froze and I had to refresh, so it deleted my reply, apparently.

Thank you for your reply.  Do you have a bul buyer as a customer that might be able to help me?

Or how much bulk would,I have to buy for this project?

I decided to reach out to you folks since I assume Mitsubishi-tv is engrossed in their current oil and gas initiatives and would not have interest themselves.

I purchased their last brand new 92" in Colorado the week after they announced they were no longer making tv'z.  It is an incredible TV and now with 4K out their, it would be great to be able to offer an upgrade to the market that purchased these TV's.

I appreciate your thoughts and suggestions. I am interested in commissioning someone to build, the PCB as you have suggested.

    Thank you for,your time.

  • Hi Robert,

The best route that I can offer you is to reach out to some of our design houses and see if they would have any opportunities for you. TI is not an OEM so we don't produce the PCBs or any of the hardware for these systems aside from the silicon components (DMD and controller). Reaching out to Mitsubishi may be your best bet - these forums are intended to support Advanced Light Control applications, not TV and enterprise projection applications: www.ti.com/.../overview.page

    Thank you,
