DLP4500: Creating a pattern sequence with HDMI cable

Part Number: DLP4500
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DLPC350

Hello everybody

I got a LC4500 electronic kit from Keynote Photonics (this board is only the elctronic part, i.e. comprising only the DMD board and the driver board. It works also with DLPLC4500 GUI from TI) and I need to be answered about an issue: it has a mini-HDMI input port.

I am using TI GUI for Lightcrafter 4500 version 3.0.1

My goal is to create a pattern sequence for a spectrometer application, so I want to activate column by column of the DMD.

I go to the "creating sequence" tab and I upload 256 images that I will project onto the DMD (each image represents an activated column).

For create the sequence I have to go to "pattern sequence" tab (variable exposure), select video port (mini-HDMI), start from frame index=0 and add that image to the sequence pressing the button "add pattern to the sequence" and so on up to frame index=255?

After that has the pattern sequence been created?

Another question: How can I decide to activate only an image of the pattern sequence created and go to the next one pressing a button?

Thank's

  • Hi Marco,

I'm not completely clear on what you're asking as far as creating a pattern sequence, so I would recommend that you read the user's guide for the Lightcrafter 4500, which details how to create and project a pattern sequence in section 3.3: www.ti.com/.../dlpu011e.pdf

For your second question, the Lightcrafter 4500 GUI doesn't have a button that can be used to advance the patterns. However, you could use external triggers to do this. More detail on triggering is found in section 3.3.4 of the user's guide and in section 8.4.1 of the datasheet for the DLPC350: www.ti.com/.../dlpc350.pdf

Please let me know if you have further questions!

  • Hi Paul
Ok maybe I didn't make clear my issue, so I'll try to explain better:
I'm going to use the LC4500 board with its GUI with the aim to use the DMD as it works in DLPNIRSCAN EVM
The DMD has to activate column by column, to project an image coming from a grating onto a detector (spectroscopy application)
So pattern sequence seems to be a little bit tricky to make it.
I'm thinking about using "Video Mode" in GUI: with LabVIEW I send image by image to the DMD (via FDP-link cable), and between one image and the next one I'll set a waiting time just to give time to the detector to acquire the signal. So, in an automized way, I could make a sort of pattern sequence because I send serially the images (patterns) to the DMD through "Video Mode".
May it works. What do you think?
  • Hi Marco,

That approach seems reasonable. For clarity, I would like to note that there are two types of video modes.
    1. Video streaming - data over HDMI is streamed as a normal projector would.
    2. Video pattern mode - data over HDMI is used to provide data for the pattern sequence, where the pattern sequence settings determine which bit-planes of the input data are used and how long they are displayed.

Your best resources for these topics are the datasheet for the DLPC350 and the user's guide for the Lightcrafter.
