DLPLCR6500EVM: Pattern on DMD panel can not be changed and unable to switch to pattern from memory mode

Part Number: DLPLCR6500EVM

Dear all,
I have just bought DLPLCR6500EVM. At the first time, we can load the pattern (an arrow and line shape) and it can be seen on DMD Mirror panel. But next time, the DLPC900REF GUI shows "unable to pattern from memory mode. Error Invalid controller /DMD". This pattern  on DMD panel can not be changed even if I had tried to reboot the product.  When power supply is on, the LED D8 and D9 is on and D6 is flashing. The specific failure pictures are shown below. What is wrong? What can I do? Replace new one? Look forward to your quick reply!

  • Hello Jiawen,

To be sure that we understand correctly, after the initial display of a pattern one time (the very first time) the EVM will no longer display a pattern even if you reboot.  Is this correct.

Also, have you tried downloading the latest firmware from the DLPLCR6500EVM page?  Scroll down the page to the DLP LightCrafter 6500 EVM Reference Design section and download the "DLP LightCrafter 6500 Firmware and Software Bundle with GUI Source Code v 3.0.0 dated 9/2016.

Also, please be sure that your power supply has enough wattage properly initialize the board.  There is a recommendation in the EVM Guide --> http://www.ti.com/lit/pdf/dlpu028

  • Hello Fizix,

Thanks for your reply. We have used the DLP LightCrafter 6500 Firmware and Software Bundle with GUI Source Code v 3.0.0 ( soft ware dated 9/2016). And the power supply (ASTEC Model: DPS53-M)  has enough wattage which was purchased from Mouser Inc.  According to User's Guide, first we connected the EVM to power and turned the power on. A continuous pattern display sequence began. Then we used USB cable  to connect it to computer and opened the software. Second, we selected Pattern On-The-Fly Mode and add two patterns (exposure time 1000000us). And then selected “Update Lut” and “Start”. The two patterns can be seen on DMD panel. But when we press "stop", the two patterns have not disappeared and shows all time (Fig.1). So we turned off the power and rebooted the system.  When we changed the operating mode from "video mode" to others,  the software showed "unable to pattern from memory mode. Error Invalid controller /DMD". Soft ware can not control the EVM.  We think the DMD mirrors are stuck. Is it right? What can we do?

Fig1. the patterns always showed on DMD even if the power turned off

Fig.2  the software can not control the EVM.

    Best

  • Dear,
I have just purchased this product. Now I need DLP for work. Customer Service Representative is waiting for your approval . Return/replace one? I am looking forward to your response. Thanks!

  • Hello Jaiwen,

I consulted with the development team here and the following is a summary of their response:

We have seen issues like this under the following conditions:

    • Bad flex cable or flex cable connectors that are not firmly tightened
    • DMD not seated correctly into the DMD socket
    • SPI connection between EVM and DMD board is bad (usually flex cable issue - see above)
    • DMD board has become bad
    • Occasionally the DMD itself has gone bad (this can happen if the DMD board is touched while the EVM is running)

Was the DMD board handled while the DMD was running?

    Fizix

  • Hello Fizix,

The DMD board has not been touched because we know the board consists of micromirrors. It is common sense.

  • My group purchased a DLP 6500 EVM (purchase order number: 10522123) from Mouser Inc. (Shanghai) last year. It works well. Last month we have  bought  another DLP 6500 EVM (purchase order number: 11689238). But it can not used. It is not my fault. So I ask to replace new one. The customer representative of mouser Inc. said they  can replace new one after Ti  validate TI’s approval. We have no time to wait.  We are looking forward to TI’s approval soon.
