Hello - i am having difficulty when trying to upload firmware to the lightcrafter EVM and control software v3.0.1. wile attempting to use the control software to program, the pattern ceases to be displayed, but no progress is made beyond the gui displaying the "waiting to enter programming mode" and loosing connection to the EVM. power cycle resets the system back to its original state. what am i missing when trying to program the firmware?

Hi Patrick,

Sorry that you're having difficulty. Can you attach some screenshots of what you're seeing? Do you have the DLPR350PROM downloaded?

One thing I would recommend would be to replace the USB cable with a different one, just to eliminate that variable.

Hi Paul,

This is where the software stops. I have tried multiple cables and multiple ports to no avail. I can communicate using the app and change display, but i need to insert different images into the flash. A power cycle on the DLP dev kit restores connection to the software

Hi Patrick,

As best I can guess, something must have gotten corrupted in memory and I'm going to recommend that you re-flash your device. Follow the procedure given here: www.ti.com/.../dlpu017a.pdf

I think that re flashing your device will solve your problem.

Hi Paul,

Re-flashing per the procedure you gave has bricked my device (i no longer can connect via the LightCrafter app). How do i recover?

Ironically, the procedure for recovering a bricked device is to do the procedure you just did. My advice would be to double check your connections and make sure that you built the cable and UM232H correctly.

Did you have any issues on your first attempt to flash the board?

The programmer didn't show any warnings or issues. A second attempt at re-flashing did not fix it. I also tried verifying the data - verified 100%.

Is there anything missing in the instructions?

Yes. But a question about J30 - why does disabling the LED drive make a difference while programming? Should i not be using J18 (hold_in_boot) for this operation?

Perhaps another silly question - the instructions have rev 2.0.0 PROM version. What changes for rev 3.0.0 PROM?

ok - changing the size value in the JTAG flash programmer to 0x0100000 restored communications. I still cannot update code though.

Following the same procedure, I bricked mine as well. I have done this in the past, I just need to dig into my notes to see what worked. We'll adjust that document once I've got it figured out.

You're still having the original issue? Have you uninstalled and reinstalled the GUI?

ok, after trying a couple of things this is what i found out.

Sometimes the erase screen in the JTAG will go non-responsive. if that happened, i restarted the erase and ensured the progress bar moved smoothly to the top. Not clicking other windows helped.

I entered the value 0x1000000 into the size field of the JTAG programming app & programmed the entire .bin file from the JTAG flash program. This restored my device for operation (including the GUI), but the programming thru the GUI still didn't work (hung at trying to enter programming mode). I have not re-installed the GUI, so that could be a culprit yet.

Thanks for sharing Patrick. I was able to restore my device with your tip of increasing the memory size, looks like we'll have to edit the document to properly reflect that. Once I got communication back, the GUI was able to update my firmware. It seems that unchecking "Skip bootloader update" causes a similar symptom to what you're experiencing, I'll need to dig into that a bit more.

Generally, I'm still confused about why your GUI won't program your device. If re-installing the GUI doesn't do the trick, then it is possible that there is something going wrong with communication between the DLPC350 and the computer over USB, some sort of hardware issue. But let's cross that bridge after you re-install.
