I hope to use a digitial micromirror device in a microscope. The questions are as follows:

1. What is the incident angle of the beam?

2. How to hold the dmd in the optical path? Is there any mature holder? Or we need to design a new one?

3. How to control the dmd by a computer? Are there any program examples?

Thanks for your question!

1. Take a look at this app note: www.ti.com/.../dlpa022.pdf, you'll find a good diagram (Figure 1) to help you out.

2. There are holders for the DMD, this app note details the mounting concepts: www.ti.com/.../dlpa067.pdf. Look on pages 5 and 6.

3. The DMDs need a controller IC, which for the DLP4500 is the DLPC350. If you take a look at the DLPLCR4500EVM GUI, that's a good example. There is also a programmer's guide for the DLPC350 which will give you some idea of the functionality allowed.

About Q2, I read the pdf. Still, I wonder that do we need to design a mechanical holder for DMD? Or is there any product that we can use directly as a holder?

Hi Meggie,

The mounting system for the DMD is fairly complex and there is no complete direct off the shelf holder which can be purchased. Pieces of the mounting hardware can be purchased, but your design considerations must be accounted for because of the requirement for the PCB. This document has more detail: www.ti.com/.../dlpa034.pdf. Section 6 has links to the CAD files for the pieces required.

I would recommend that you reach out to one of our design partners found on this page: www.ti.com/.../advanced-light-control-solutions-services.page

They will be able to help you and perhaps sell you a prebuilt electronics setup including DMD.

From the page I saw that DLP5500 has some design products. So if we purchase DLP5500, we can also purchase relative mountings directly, right?

Hi Meggie,

With the DLP5500 you'd need a different controller - it uses the DLPC200, which is fairly complex to use and doesn't currently have an evaluation module available.

Both Anhua and Wintech have offerings for the DLP4500/DLPC350 platform.

I understand that the product of DLP4500 is as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and the mounting as shown in Fig. 10 (all the figures come from this document www.ti.com/.../dlpa034.pdf) needs to be designed by ourselves. Is that right?

You shouldn't need to design anything yourself, there are links to the CAD files provided in section 6 of the document you posted.

Hi Donghan,

If you have a manufacturer that you'd like to use, you certainly can. A simpler approach would be to reach out to Anhua or Wintech - they'll sell you a complete product with electronics and DMD.

It has been done, but TI doesn't have an documentation or support for LabVIEW. I recommend searching posts in this forum to see what other users have done.

I am sorry that I still have some questions to ask you.
1. What is the damage threshold of DLP4500? Or what is the maximum intensity it can suffer from?
2. From the data you sent me I found that the price of DLP4500FQD is 338.24|1ku, you mean that one DLP4500 is $338.24, right? And also, the price of DLP350 is $56.06.
3. What does the grayscale of DLP4500 mean?
4. We can use a LabVIEW program to control DLP350, right? Although TI has no support.
5. What is the phone number of technical support for DMD? I tried 800-336-5236, but nobody answered.

Hi Meggie,

1. The maximum intensity is described in the datasheet, section 6.4, Recommended Operating Conditions.
2. The prices you quoted mean that if you buy 1000 units, each unit costs that much.
3. I don't understand the question.
4. As I mentioned, it is possible, it has been done, but TI has no support for this.
5. E2E is the best way to get technical support. We have no direct phone number.
