DLPC2607: Use of mobile DDR SDRAM

Part Number: DLPC2607

Hi,

The documentation for the DLPC2607 lists the ability to connect directly to mDDR SDRAM up to 256MBs using a 16-bit interface, but what I can't quite make out what the purpose of it is, and whether or not it's required or optional.
Does it serve purely as a buffer for the video stream, or can it be used for other purposes as well?
Specifically I'm interested in using its high-bandwidth high-capacity abilities to store video frames, I'm working on an application that would mostly require constantly cycling video. If I could buffer this data in the SDRAM and access it from there it would take a huge load off of the microcontroller.

Thanks
