DLP3310: "1080p DMD" vs. "DMD Active Array"

Team,

I'd like to understand what the actual resolution is, a DLP3310 can display. The datasheet says it 'Displays Full-HD 1920 × 1080 Pixels on the Screen'. But the same datasheet also states that the actual DMD Active Array is only 1368x768 Micromirrors.

Does this mean that Full-HD input images will be scaled down to 1368x768? So I'd assume the real life resolution is only 1368x768.

    The fast switching speed of the DMD micromirrors combined with the advanced DLP image processing algorithms enables each micromirror to display two distinct pixels on the screen during every frame, resulting in a full 1920 x 1080 pixel image being displayed. This means that the full 1920x1080 image is displayed without being scaled down.

    Hi,

    I was originally asking Robert Finger, so I would like to take the opportunity to answer directly.

    when you say " each micromirror to display two distinct pixels" does this mean that the frame rate at the DMD is actually twice the input rate (60Hz -> 120Hz)?
    I assume there is no modification of the optical path, so the two pixels are displayed on the same location on the screen?
    As the input to physical resolution is not an integer ratio (actually it's 1,44). So I assume there is some scaling and filtering but the number of input pixels is the same as the number of output pixels with twice the frame rate. Is this correct?
    Does this solution provide 8 bit color depth per color component on the screen?

    You are correct. The system runs at twice the "video framerate" allowing for multiple subframes to be displayed. However, you are not quite right on how the input pixels are displayed in the second paragraph. The pixels are not displayed on the same exact location, but shifted slightly relative to one another.

    Hi,
    I understand the solution is similar to the 4k UHD DLP470P where the optical path is adapted to four positions and the input resolution has a ratio of 2 in x and y direction. But for the DLP3310 there ratio is 1,41 in x and y and only two optical positions. So there will be resampling/filtering to convert the 1920x1080 to 2 x 1368x768?

    Yes, that is correct. The image must be processed to adapt the 1920x1080 image to the pixel shifted 1368x768 DMD.
