DLPLCR6500EVM: DMD suddenly stopped displaying patterns

Part Number: DLPLCR6500EVM

Hi,

We bought the DLP 6500 EVM from Texas Instruments two weeks ago and have been working with it for a few days. Today it was working normally and then suddenly without any change it stopped displaying patterns. It stopped showing the default pattern and cannot be detected via USB anymore. We tried the reset push button but it didn't work. We didn't alter the jumpers. The power supply is 12V and 5A so it is not the problem.

The power LEDs are on, but the controller LED (D6) either stays off or is constantly on (not blinking). In the latter case it is seen by the computer via USB but it says it is an unknown device (doesn't detect what it is). I tried turning off the power then turning it on again, and also changing the power socket, but it didn't work.

Could you please help with this issue, and let us know if there is something we can try? Or should we send it for replacement?

Thank you.

Best regards,

Khalid

  • Hello Khalid,

    Please try the following:

    1. Please put a jumper on J11 (boothold) and start up the board.
    2. Then start the GUI and select the "Chipset Type" radio button on the left vertical panel.
    3. Go to the Firmware page and select a known good Firmware file. (You can download the default one from the http://www.ti.com/tool/dlpr900 page).  Be sure to select the 6500 image.
    4. Then press Upload.  If it uploads, power down, and remove J11 and restart.

Let us know if that works.

  • Hi Fizix,

The DMD started working again on Monday, on its own... And I was working normally with it till now, when it all of a sudden did the same issue as before.

I tried what you suggest but it doesn't work because the board is not being recognized by the USB when this happens (so the GUI cannot connect to it). Do you have any other ideas on what is causing this and how to fix it?

    Thanks a lot.

    Khalid

  • Khaled,

Please try a different USB cable, port on the computer, and if available, a different computer.

    Let us know the result.

    Fizix.

P.S. did you recently install any other software, USB devices (and drivers)?

  • Fizix,

    Thank you for your reply.

No I did not. Actually I do not think this will solve the problem, but I can try it. The computer and the USB cable are working fine, it is not them that stop working suddenly. It is rather the DMD controller itself, which stops projecting patterns. The D6 LED stops blinking. I also noticed that the DMD is fixed on a random pattern (grid) as if it is frozen at one part of the boot/default pattern. This happened also last time but at a different pattern (black and white lines, another frame of the default pattern).

Kindly let me know what you think.
  • Khaled,

I suspected that it would not, but needed to verify that something simple was not the cause.

At this point it sounds like there is possibly a fault with the controller.

Please contact the source you purchased it from and let them know that it appears your kit may be defective.
