My optical engineer asked this and we can't find info about it: what flyeye lens array pitch should be used; is smaller better, if not, why and how to determine the optimal size.

Please review TI "Optical Engine Reference Design for DLP3010 Digital Micromirror DeviceThis design uses Fly's Eye.

DLP3010 DMD has same pixel architecture as DLP4710 DMD. Please download associated Zemax file and that could be a good starting point. http://www.ti.com/lit/an/dlpa079/dlpa079.pdf

Hi Mike,
The Number of elements and Pitch size is design trade-off among pupil size, uniformity required and manufacturing cost. Typically our customers have used at 3x5 lens array and may be upto 7x10 . Based on other trade-off the pitch could be any where in range of 0.6 mm to 1 mm. You have more flexibility in design trade-off with bigger devices.

Section 7 (page 8) of the appication note has link to Zemax files. The Zemax file is also available a "design file" docuemnt type category in technical documents for DLP3010

Thank you. What is the difference between this DMD and 4710 and 470TP? Is it just the array size and proportion differences of everything else in the optical engine relative to it?

470TP DMD support 4K resolution and is driven by a different controller.

I also meant the difference between DLP3010 and 4710. Is it just size difference of micromirrors and micromirror array, but same proportion?

Also, I am not sure how useful the 3010 reference design will be as 3010 uses side illumination but 4710/470TP use bottom illumination.

Hi Mike,
Difference between DLP3010 and DLP4710 are:
1. Array size due number of micro-mirror
2. Illumination direction - Side vs bottom

Both use same pixel architecture and have same pixel pitch. You need to make changes to design at least for these two.

2 will require a different rotated RTIR prism. Not sure how useful the reference design for DLP3010 will be for it because of that.
