DLP dynamic contrast?

There is surprisngly no search result for this. I believe it is possible via the DLP controller chip by dimming the whole LED when frame is dim, but it may also be possible by taking advantage of the +- tilt of the micromirrors. But I can't find info on both.

Also, will the former (DLP Controller doing the dynamic contrast) introduce any latency to the system?

Hi Mike,
The capability is part of IntelliBright Alogirthm implemented in DLPC34XX family of controllers. Please refer to Application note on "TI DLP® IntelliBright™ Algorithms for the DLPC343x Controller" www.ti.com/.../dlpa058.pdf.

When CAIC is enabled (section 5, Page 6) and gain is set to 1, the algorithm operates in "power reduction mode". In dark frame , LEDs are dimmed. The LED driver (PMIC) is the gating item for the lowest current level in a completely dark frame

This feature doesn't introduce any latency.

Any plans for having that in DLPC6421?
And will using laser illumination improve contrast?

Hi Mike,

IntelliBright algorithms not available in DLPC6421; however it has Dynamic Black algorithm, this will improve the overall contrast by dynamically adjusting the LED currents wrt input scene content.
