DLPDLCR3010EVM-G2: 120Hz refresh rate at 720p

Part Number: DLPDLCR3010EVM-G2
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DLPC3438, DLP3010, DLPA2005, DLPC3433, DLPA3000

I'm planning to purchase the DLPDLCR3010EVM-G2 and want to understand what is the maximum achievable frame rate at the 720p resolution with this evaluation module. I'm interested in running it at 120Hz. Also, i want to have the ability to change the frame rate to 90Hz when needed. What will this require?

Another question I have is that when was this model released? I have one that I'm using from about two years ago, 2016. I want to know if there is a difference in the optical module, driver, LEDs etc between this model and the one I have.

I would appreciate if I can talk to someone at TI directly to get answers and make a purchase. Please contact me at ginni.grover@intel.com to talk directly.

  • Ginni,

    Thanks for your interest in our DLP technology, and welcome to the E2E forums.

    The DLPDLCR3010EVM-G2 features a different optical setup than the standard DLPDLCR3010EVM that provides a higher brightness. In addition, it also supports 120Hz framerates out of the box.

    Can you describe your 90 Hz use case?

    Best Regards,
    Philippe Dollo
  • Thanks Philippe. The use case for 90Hz is the same. Actually instead of 90Hz, is there a possibility to turn of the LED or have dark time for first few milliseconds while running at 120Hz?

    Another question is for the version. How can I find out if the one I have is 3010EMV-G2 or just 3010EVM? I can't tell by looking at the projector which version it is. The information I get from the software is about the DMD, Controller, firmware and PMIC/LED driver. How can I find out which version I have? I can provide you the above info if that helps. This is important because I need more than one projectors, so I have to decide which and how many I need to order more and if I can use the existing one with the new one.

    Thanks much
    -Ginni
  • Ginni,

    The LEDs can be individually (or altogether) toggled on or off using I2C commands as detailed in the DLPC343x programmer's guide:
    www.ti.com/.../dlpu020c.pdf

    These commands are also available in the LightCrafter Display GUI software. As for your version number, the two versions have slightly different visual appearances. They also have different system configurations:

    > Gen 1 EVM --> DLP3010 DMD, DLPC3438 ASIC, DLPA2005 PMIC
    > Gen 2 EVM --> DLP3010DMD, DLPC3433 ASIC, DLPA3000 PMIC

    By reading the configuration on the GUI, you can use this to tell which EVM you have.

    I hope this helps.

    Best Regards,
    Philippe Dollo
  • Thanks, that is helpful. I verified, I have the Gen 1.
  • Hi Phillippe,
    I have more questions.
    The Gen1 EVM I have is able to focus at near plane, about 4-5inches from the lens. But from what I understood from speaking to another person last month at TI, that EVM Gen1 can't do that but EVM Gen2 can do that. That's why I started looking at Gen2. But I don't need Gen 2 if Gen1 has that capability. So, can you clarify that Gen1 is capable of focusing at near plane, about 5 inches from the lens?

    Also, when we had used Gen1 two years ago, we got a special firmware to run at 120Hz. If I now buy another Gen1 module, can I get a firmware to run it at 120Hz at the full resolution? Would that be additional cost?
    Thanks
    -Ginni
  • Hi Phillippe,
    Apologies for reposting the message but I'm in a rush to make the decision which projector(s) to buy and need a few more questions answered.

    It will be great if you can reply asap.

  • Ginni,

    I apologize for the delay. Let me try to assist you best I can.

    The Gen1 and Gen2 EVM have identical optics. As such you don't lose anything moving from one to the other. The major difference is the DLPA LED driver on the system, which provides higher brightness on the Gen2. Since the Gen2 EVM costs the same as the Gen1 EVM, I recommend you simply use the Gen2 EVM since you can just reduce the brightness if needed.

    In short, I recommend you get the Gen2 EVM instead of the Gen1 EVM.
