DLPLCR6500EVM: some problems after startup

Part Number: DLPLCR6500EVM

Hello,

Now we are using a kind of projector developed based on the DLPLCR6500. And then we find some problems. The first one, sometimes after the DLP power-up (or reset by I2C command), a part of image is missing when we start pattern display.

error images of the first time we found this problem

(error images of the second time we found this problem)

(the correct images)

This phenomenon always appears at the first time display after power-up or restart. And then every image will miss a part at the same area, no matter in which display mode and how we configure the LUT, unless restart(by I2C command or power-down and then power-up). It seems that sometimes a part of area of DMD is out of control after power-up.

And then the second problem, sometimes we found the DLP didn’t execute the I2C command (except restart command) after power-up or restart. From the GUI(DLP LightCrafter 6500&9000 - 3.0.0), we found the DLP entered Standby mode, and the parameters got from DLP were different from that we set in the firmware. If we use GUI to control the DLP, it would report an error. This problem can only be solved by restart(by I2C command or power-down and then power-up).

(the phenomenon of GUI when this problem occurs)

These two problems could appear on each one of our projectors, and they have some common points. For example, they appeared occasionally and we can't find any regularity, and they always appeared after power-up or restart and can only solved by restart. It looks like the DLPC900 or DLP9000 might get some mistakes in the startup process. Have you ever found these kinds of problems before? Do you have any idea to solve these problems?

Thanks a lot.

  • Hello Zhang,

If I understand your post correctly, this is not something we see on our 6500 EVM. It looks like one or more Reset blocks are not responding correctly.

Let me understand your notation on the images. Is the system automatically (spontaneously), but unexpectedly switching between modes, or are you intentionally switching between modes, but getting the error message? The error message will happen if a mode is running and an attempt is made to switch to different mode. I

Also try a different USB cable to connect to the kit. We have had a number of cases where a bad or marginal USB cable has caused unexpected or random errors on a system.

  • Hello Fizix,

Thank you for replying my post.

For the first problem, these photos are just test images with some circles on them.We use pre-stored pattern mode displaying them and triggering our camera to take photos. You can see the error photos got some area missed compared with the correct images. We can affirm it was something wrong on DLP's display as we could observe this phenomenon by eyes.

(we wanted to display a image that all pixels' gray level is 255,but some area was missing)

For the second problem, usually we control our projector by I2C command, not by GUI.But sometimes the DLP didn't execute the I2C command,so we conected DLP with USB cable and opened the GUI.And then we found DLP getting into standby state and the display mode switched between pre-stored pattern mode and video pattern mode spontaneously that shown on the GUI.And if we choose any mode manually on the GUI,it would send an error message. The DLP wasn't running in any mode when we did all of these works as the DLP wouldn't execute any command when this problem happened.

As for USB cable,we had used a number of cables and it seemed to have nothing to do with this problem.

  • Dear Zhang,

Thank you for ruling out the USB cable as an issue.

If I understand correctly, this is not a TI EVM, but a board of your own design.

Please check the power supply sequence and also data and communication signal lines for good connection.
