DLP660TE: 10,000:1 contrast?

Part Number: DLP660TE
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DLPC4422,

I don't think I should mention which but one of the projector suppliers using this chipset advertises 10,000:1 contrast ratio. Is that the native contrast I can achieve with this chipset with maybe small enough projection lens aperture or is it more likely the "dynamic contrast"?

I've already been told that clients have been able to achieve 3000:1 with F/3.0 optics with the pico DMDs so the 10,000:1 number was surprising.

Thank you.

  • Hi Mike,

Thank you very much for your post and interest in DLP products!

There are many "variables" that can be tweaked in projection system to boost the contrast specification. So without knowing the exact system, we cannot know if that number is referring to "dynamic contrast". There are many examples of projectors using the DLP660TE (and DLPC4422) that have contrast specifications equal to or over 10,000:1 which you mentioned before.

    Thanks,

    Brandon

But are those specifications for native contrast or "dynamic contrast" (digitally dimming the whole frame based on the frame content)?

Due to my unique use case I am ready to sacrifice the brightness greatly (<200 lumens) just to achieve 10,000:1 native contrast. I just wanted to know if 1) there is a physics/optics law that won't allow to improve native contrast beyond 3000:1 with DLP technology at any reasonable brightness and 2) if you have had clients actually achieve that or better native contrast (if yes please mention the number) or if real life results are unknown to your team.

    Thank you.

  • Hi Mike,

We do not specify a maximum native contrast in our DMDs. I would reach out to the manufacture of the projectors to determine if the specified value is native or dynamic.

    Thanks,

  • We are building our own optical module and just want to determine how much native contrast we can achieve realistically with DLP. That is why I am asking.
