DLP6500FYE: Will a femtosecond laser input do harm to this DMD 6500?

Part Number: DLP6500FYE

I want to choose a femtosecond laser as an input of my system and I have a DLP6500 with DMD6500FYE on it. I want to know will this femtosecond laser cause some unrecoverable damage to my DMD. If it does, is there any solution I can prevent this happen?

  • Hello Tiachu,

First, welcome to the DLP section of the TI-E2E community.

TI has NOT tested femtosecond lasers on DMDs.  So we cannot guarantee that you will not damage the DMD.

The following are some factors to consider:

    • Aerial energy density (how big of a spot will you laser form on the DMD surface) / per pulse.  Since this is a femtosecond laser, it may be possible to ablate the upper layer of the micromirrors without heating up the micromirror itself. Repeated such ablation would erode the micromirrors to point of structural failure.
    • The time averaged power on the array. Power per pulse * pulse rate.  In other words the heat load on the DMD.
