Font compressor utility

Hello,
I've found many references to a TI font compressor utility, including a thread here (now locked) where many other people, like me, are looking for this uutility and not finding it. It's been said TI has stopped providing this utility but no one seems to know why. There doesn't seem to be any other similar software unfortunately. I am having a problem with the creation of a DCP with chinese subtitles and this it seems would be the solution. If anyone has this utility, would you be so kind as to send it or give me a link so I can try it out. And TI, if you're listening, if you will not provide this utility at least explain why.
Cheers,

Damien Molineaux

  • Hello Damien,

Unfortunately we no longer support the font compressor utility, therefore we cannot help with your request.
Initially the utility was created to bypass system limitations in earlier versions of our hardware, but future revisions have made it so that the
font compressor utility was no longer necessary.

  • Damien,

I was out of the office when this came in. I thought I would provide a little more information....

While it is true that TI is no longer supporting the Font Compressor utility as the need for it should have ended several years ago (Series 2 does not have the same 640kB hardware limitation that Series 1 has), you might be able to find it (unsupported) via the archive.org WayBackMachine:

    web.archive.org/.../default.aspx

There is NO support for the Font Compressor available. What is there is the last version built. If there are issues with it, or if it doesn't work in a certain OS version, etc., we are unable to provide any support for any issues.

Just to clarify what it does....

The font compressor reduces the size of a TrueType or OpenType font in two primary ways.

    1. It removes large optional tables such as the embedded bitmap tables, the PCL printer tables, and the horizontal and vertical device metrics tables.
    2. It analyzes the subtitle content, and removes glyphs (characters) that are not used from the font.

The font produced by the font compressor should be a valid TrueType or OpenType font, but it may not be usable by other systems for other purposes. The font will only contain the glyphs that are present in the content that the font compressor was run against. If the content changes, the font compressor must be run again against the new content and the original (complete) font to ensure that any new characters are included in the compressed font.

Also note: it does NOT enforce the 640kB limit. It just creates the new font file based on the XML it was given. If that file ends up > 640kB (Series 1 hardware limitation), then you will need to break the subtitles into (more) reels to get a smaller font file.

    Good luck.

    Regards,
    Gary
