Identification of (very) old DMD

Hi,

we are trying to reuse the optical engine of a pretty old DLP projector (3M MP7730) for an experimental setup. It would help us a lot if we knew what DMD was actually used in that projector model. Unfortunately, I was not able to identify any marking on the DMD package (apart from ".7XGA" which obviously only referes to the size and resolution of the chip). I made two photos of the device, it would be very nice if somebody could identify the part and let us know the part number of it.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Thanks a lot in advance!

  • Hello Malte,

Thank you for using the DLP E2E forums.

The DMD in question is an old 0.7" XGA DMD that is obsolete and no longer supported. Unfortunately I cannot share the part number as it was never made public.

    Regards,

    Oscar

  • Hi Oscar,

Thanks a lot for your reply! Maybe you could at least help in regard to one question we have concerning this old DMD: is it similar to newer devices (like e.g. the DLP6500 DMD) in reagrd to the ±12° micromirror tilt angle and the 45° angle for the incident light path? I had a look at the DMD under the microscope and as far as I can see the mirrors are arranged parallel to the sides of the chip (i.e. it's not a diamond pixel array), which would thus mean this DMD would require a 45° angle of light input.

Thanks a lot for you help again!

    Best,

    Malte

  • Hello Matle,

If you're looking for a DMD with the same resolution, along with the same ±12° micromirror tilt angle and the 45° angle light path, then your best bet is the 0.55" DLP550JE DMD. Otherwise if you're looking for a DMD with a similar size, also including the tilt angle and light path, then either the 0.65" DLP650LE WXGA or 0.65" DLP650NE 1080p DMDs would be recommended.

  • Hi Oscar,

    thanks again for you reply!

I think you gave the relevant information implicitly but let me please explain further to be sure:

We already have a DLP6500 DMD (being part of a LightCrafter 6500 evaluation module) to which we want to experimentally attach the light engine of the old projector. We are aware of the different aspect ratios of the two DMDs as well as of the overall mechanical difficulties that might be connected to this approach.

However, it is of course essential that the old DMD and the DLP6500 do at least have the same micro mirror tilt angle (12°) and angle of light incident (45°).

Could you thus confirm that the old DMD (from the above mentioned 3M DLP projector) does have a micro mirror tilt angle of +/- 12° and angle of light incident of 45°?

Thanks a lot for your help!

    Best,
    Malte

  • Hello,

I was able to attach the old light engine to the LC6500 module and get a proper image. Thus I think my above mentioned assumptions concerning the mirror tilt angle and the angle of incident ligth for the old DMD were correct.

Thanks a lot for your support again!

    Best,
