What it the most convenient DMD evaluation board for my project?

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DLPLCRC410EVM, DLPLCR70EVM, DLPC410, DLP7000

Hello.

I already search a lot about DMDs but I still have some doubts to choose an evaluation board for my project.

With a light source, a DMD and with a photodiode I want do modulate the light reflected on the DMD according with the flux measured by the photodiode.

For than, the optimal solution is to control each micromirror individually and really fast, maybe using a FPGA.

My doubts:

1) I'm not sure if with some evaluation board I can control each micromirror individually. If not, what solutions could I use?

2) What is the most cheap evaluation board that could I use for this project?

Thank you in advance,

Cédric

  • Hello Cédric,

Welcome to the DLP section of the TI-E2E forums.

This is a good question.  In order to determine what is best, a couple of requirements are needed.  what pattern rate do you need in order to modulate the flux of the light source.  What source type (lamp, LED, Laser Diode, Laser . .  ) and power are you contemplating?

These will help to determine the EVM that will meet the requirements.

  • Hello,

    Thank you for your answer.

Non-coherent light source, for example: quartz tungsten halogen lamp.

    I'm not contemplating the power...

I would like to use the best rate possible. But for the first step of this project, I would like to use a cheap evaluation board, even if the pattern rate is very low. The crucial thing is to control the micromirrors in a "direct" way and individually. If it is not possible individually, maybe one row at each time...

    Thank you

    Cheers

A follow up question is the size of DLP micromirror array your project requires?

It sounds lie you need an EVM that enables direct access to the DMD (i.e. does not include projection optics) and provides pixel accurate control

The lowest cost offering would be the DLPLCR6500EVM, you can use USB to "load pattern on the fly"  image data , speed will be limited by USB data rates and the need to load data for the full 1920x1080 micromirror array.

The fastest offering vs. cost would be the combination of DLPLCR70EVM (DLP7000 DMD) and DLPLCRC410EVM (DLPC410 Controller)

You would need to write more software and some FPGA code, but would be able to use a single row of micromirrors at a very fast update rate ~ 50 kHz or faster
