IR source ?

I have searched DLP products of D3000, DLi3000, D4100, and Light Commander. From these products I think only D4100 can be used for telecom wavelength but I am not quite sure because wavelength efficiency graph for other products (DLi3000 and D3000) from DLi website, http://www.dlinnovations.com/dli_docs/wavelength_single_pass.pdf,  shows that UV and visible efficiency is not bad for 1550nm wavelength. My questions are:

1) My source is pulsed laser at telecom wavelength, Which products of DLP can be used with this source?

2) Is it possible to change chipset of Light Commander or DMD board from Logicpd such that working at 1550nm wavelength?

3) Can chipset of DLP products which are designed for wavelength range of 400-700nm be changed to make them working at 1550nm?

If yes to question 2 and 3, How can I buy chipset replacing with current chipset in these products to make them working at 1550nm because I could not see such chipsets from Ti website.

Than you.

  • Hi Enad,

The wavelength transmission graph that you pointed to shows 3 different types of windows, UV, visible and IR. The wavelength you desire would need an IR window on the DMD. Currently only the 0.7XGA DMD carries that option. This DMD is only available on the Discovery 4100 platform. Unfortunately, the DMDs are not exchangeable between the different platforms. It sounds like you might already be working with DLi, which is one of the TI DLP partner Design Houses. The Design Houses are partnered with TI to sell the developement platforms and the chipset as well as provide design services. You can find a list of the Design Houses on the TI website along with their expertise areas (www.ti.com/dlpdesign).

  • Thank you for your reply.

Since I do not need efficiency at which DMD reflect light near 100%, reflection from DMD with 50 or 40 percent is enough for me because my experiment is not projection of an image or so. I only need to pattern DMD device at 1550nm. This is a lab research experiment. The only thing I need is DMD patterning with reflection around 40 to 50 percent for 1550nm wavelength pulsed source.

In fact, I did not understand this figure, http://www.dlinnovations.com/dli_docs/wavelength_single_pass.pdf, because it says transmission wrt wavelength; what is the difference between this graph and the reflectivity of DMD for different wavelengths.

  • Enad,

There is a window on the DMD on top of the actual mirrors. The figure that you have shows the transmission for 3 different types of windows on the DMD across different wavelengths. These window options are available for select DMDs. The reflectivity of the actual mirrors is very similar to bulk aluminum. You can find the transmission waveform in the link below:
