DLPLCR6500EVM: unable to switch to pattern mode, invalid DMD

Part Number: DLPLCR6500EVM

When I connected the EVM via USB, in the GUI I can see connected. But once i switch to the pattern-on-the-fly mode, it appears "unable to swich to pattern mode,ERROR:invalid controller/DMD".

The LED D5 is dark, D8 & D9 green,D6 blink green. The version of GUI is 5.0.1, the new version. And the flex between DMD and DLPc900 is not bended, is exactly as there used to be. And the EVM I bought in Augest,2019. But this is the first time to use.  Could you give me some advise ASAP? Thank you. I am in a urgent need of this EVM in a project.

  • Hi Jing,

First - Does the status show DMD/Controller incompatible at boot up?

Please make sure the DMD detected is DLP6500. From what mode are you switching to POTF? From video/prestored pattern. Do you have a default batch file?

Or are you running OOB(Out of Box) project?-

If not , could you please flash the OOB firmware available in ti.com.

If yes, Please confirm the firmware version and Tag below the connection box in GUI to be sure that it is OOB. Also, please confirm if DMD is displaying OOB pre-stored patterns

I will be available throughout the day today to help you

    Thanks

    Sachin

  • Hi Sachin,

Thank you for the reply. When the firmware is v4.0, I failed to switch video mode to the POTF. It is like:

And then I upgrade the firmware to new 5.01, it failed too.

It seems like DMD incompatible issue. What leads to this issue. And how to solve the incompatible issue and invalid DMD issue?

For the DMD board, I unmount the DMD , then short J1, and use a external power supply(install R43, and uninstall R42 & R44). The voltage of VCC (3.3V),VOFFSET(8.5v),VRESET(10v),VBIAS(16v) is normal.

What should I do next to fix the problem?

Looking forward your reply and thank you.

    BR,

    Jing Xia

  • Jing,

Thank you for the information. Could you please send the debug log. There are cases where the controller is not able to communicate with the DMD or the key fused in the DMD is wrong. We can figure that out with the log.

There is a debug print mechanism using UART. Could you please connect the rx of the UART receiver to tx pin (J6 pin no 2 on the board) and GND (pin 6) and send me the debug log. Baud rate to be set at  115200.

    Thanks

    Sachin

  • Sachin,

I connect the debug via a USB2RS485 tool, the band rate is 115200. And once I power on the EVM, it display messy code all the time like:

Plus, I didnot connect a LED in all my test.

    Thank you.

    Jing

  • Jing,

Could you please verify if you have connected the ground

    Thanks

    Sachin

  • Sachin,

This time i changed a better UART tool, and I can see nothing in the serial terminal.

I guess it's the communication issue caused by the flex cable between DMD board and controller.

And also I want to know where i can get the flex cable, since I find this 7480-001 ver9 on mouser, but there is no ver8.

    Thank you.

    Jing

  • Jing,

Please make sure you have connected the Tx pin of controller board to your Rx pin of the receiver. There needs to be initialization codes in the beginning if your GUI says connected. We cannot confirm the flex cable is the issue without debug log. I suggest you to get the logs before ordering a new component

Let me know if you need any help w.r.t. getting the debug log

    Thanks

    Sachin

  • Jing,

There are cases where the DMD ID fused in the product is wrong resulting in DMD incompatibility. Pleases confirm with log before placing an order

    Thanks

    Sachin

  • Jing,

An easier way is to check the DMD part number behind the DMD. This can be checked without removing the DMD. Could you please provide the DMD part number?

    Regards

    Sachin

  • Jing,

Please let me know if you are able to resolve the issue

    Thanks

    Sachin

  • Sachin,

The part number is 65Z53HA080105E. And it's not solved yet. Thank you.

    BR,

    Jing

  • Jing,

The part number shipped is a DLP6500FYE (non B) shipped on Dec 2017.

There is a chance that the DMD might be damaged due to a short in the power supply. Unfortunately, You might have to order a new DMD.

Please refer to the e2e link for replacement of DMD https://e2e.ti.com/support/dlp/f/94/t/867010.

Please feel free to  ask if you need anything else.

    Thanks
