DLPLCR6500EVM: Impossible to start the DLP - Quick Start

Part Number: DLPLCR6500EVM

Hello,

I am trying to get acquainted with this equipment and I started by following the quick guide present in the manual of the DLP.

First of all, I started by powering up the device: all the LEDs are blinking in the right way and, as soon as I power up the device, I can see some extra diffracted orders (which means that the something happens when I connect it to the power); differently to what reported to the manual, I can't see a continuous pattern after 5 seconds (this is the first difference with respect to the guide).

Secondly, I connect the device to the PC through the USB cable and I open the DLP LCR6500 _ LCR9000 GUI 4.0.1. I can see from the System Control that the chip is connected, but it goes to by default to Chipset Type DLP9000 (I don't know if it is normal, in any case I switch to the DLP6500, the right one). At this point I start creating the first sequence, like in the manual, through the Pattern On-The-Fly Mode. The first issue I have is that, after selecting this modality, the selection goes automatically back to Pre-Stored Pattern Mode. I saw that the only way for which the selection stays in the Pattern On-The-Fly Mode is when I select Standby.

At this point I am not able anymore to follow the example present in the Quick Start section of the manual, since the operation mode is different. However, I tried also to use the Pre-Stored Pattern Mode by following one of the tutorials I found on the TI website but there was no way to see any change in the pattern.

The setup I used was built in this way: a green laser source impinging on the DLP, whose reflected light is projected onto a wall. Of course, I did see all the diffracted orders but I couldn't find any movement of the pattern (except a small variation when I powered up the device). The connections from and to the device were simply the power connection and the USB one.

At this point, I don't know if the problem is on the device or on the software, which doesn't communicate with the DLP.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Best regards,

Matteo

  • Hello Matteo,

Welcome to the DLP section of the TI-E2E forums.

If the driver is correctly installed it should show that it is connected to the DLPLCR6500EVM.

    Please check the following:

    • When you plug in the USB does the "System Controls" box near the upper left show "Connected" with a green radio button?
      • If not, then USB is not connecting.
      • If it does, this suggests that either the boot hold jumper is installed or somehow the Firmware on the parallel flash is corrupted.

Please refer to the following thread if the board shows as "Connected".  Specifically my first response to Sato-san about how to reload the firmware:

    https://e2e.ti.com/support/dlp/f/94/p/874525/3235758?tisearch=e2e-sitesearch&keymatch=DLP6500%252520boot%252520hold#3235758

First check the jumper listed to make sure that the boot hold jumper did not get installed somehow.  If it is installed already, try removing it and starting up again.  If it is not installed, then try the reloading procedure in the thread.

Until you get it to come up and recognize the board as the proper board, the other functionality will not work.

If the bootloader part of the firmware is damaged it will not come up with the lights showing correctly.

  • Hello,

    Thank you for your answer.

I actually tried to update the firmware and to modify the boot jumper but finally I get even worse results. Now when I plug the power, led D6 doesn't toggle anymore and I can't connect the board to the PC through the USB (it doesn't recognize when I plug the USB cable). I tried also to remove the software and install it again from scratches, with the old firmware but again led D6 is not working and the board is not recognized.

I actually think that there could be a hardware problem, is there any way to send the board to the technical assistance to see if there is any hardware problem and, in case, to get it repaired?

    Thank you in advance.

    Best regards,

    Matteo

  • Hello Matteo,

At this point I would contact the distributor that you purchased the EVM from.

This sound like the board has become damaged in  some way.  Could you disconnect the DMD board and see if the behavior with the LEDs changes.
