Coupling in IR light into dmd

Hello,

I am trying to illuminate the DMD chip with NIR light from a fiber source in my own lab, and then collect the reflection via optics from my lab. I am thinking that the best way to do this would be to simply disconnect the DMD board (with the chip) from all the optics (including the core-optics module) and connect it to only the controller board to receive signals from the comp. I was then planning on shining a collimated beam of light (from my own source) on the DMD and using the reflection. I know that the controller board has many inputs. Would it still work ok if I don't connect it to anything except the DMD (and its power supply) ? Also, would you have any suggestions for better ways to do this? I am a bit hesitant to take the DMD off the core optics module and am not sure if that is the smartest (or possible) way ...

Hello Shwetadwip,

Thank you for your question regarding the Light Commader.

The core optics module in the kit includes an integrator rod to improve illumination uniformity over the DMD. To couple your own NIR light source, I would recommend removing the LED module and having your light beam go through the integrator rod so that the light path remains the same and so that you don't have to take the DMD off the optics module. so I did actually take off the optics module (before I got your response). I think that if the integrator rod plays an important part in the beam quality hitting the DMD, it would be better if I followed your advice. If I send a collimated beam of light straight through the integrator, will the DMD be illuminated by a collimated beam?

Shwetadwip,

The input beam to the DMD is not the same collimated beam sent through the input of the integrator. The integrator is tapered with a wider output to improve illumination uniformity over a wide spectral range. The output of the collimated beam is then sent through a set of mirrors for final optical shaping.

ok... but the DMD is optimally illuminated if the input to the core optics module is a collimated beam?

You should be able to use the DMD without the optical elements if you wish. The kit was designed to allow this. However as you have surmized the integrating rod and optics provide better illumination uniformity.

Thank you.  Also, is there a source from which i can get a detailed schematic of the core optics module?  I want to use the module since it 
will help me aim the light into the dmd, but then I would also have to include it in our computer simulation.  On that note, does a model 
(ZEMAX, perhaps?) exist for the optics module?
