DLPLCR65EVM: DLP LightCrafter 6500 Software not properly displaying masks with "Load" feature

Part Number: DLPLCR65EVM

When using the "Load" feature in the DLP LightCrafter 6500 software, the masks are not cycling properly. They cycle when using the "Add Pattern" feature, but are out of order. When using the load feature for the same bit map files (masks), the masks are in the correct order in the GUI window but do not seem to be cycling when they are run on the DMD. I have set the timing setting values to ones that have worked before so this should not be the problem. I have not used the "Load" feature to add masks before, but because all of the masks look correct in the GUI I do not think the "load" file with the bit map file names is incorrect. Thanks in advance for the help!

  • Hi Tristan,

Is bit map files order listed properly in text file you load.

Can you try loading sample file provided with the software bundle and confirm the behavior. After loading add_72.txt file, Update LUT, Start, On the DMD you should See numbers incrementing from 0 to 71.

Use Pattern On-The-Fly mode, Set exposure time to 2000000uS

Could you please explain this " I have set the timing setting values to ones that have worked before so this should not be the problem " in detail.

Please share Bitmap, saved Text file, GUI Screen shots to understand problem in detail.

    Thanks,
    Shivakumar

  • Hi Shivakumar,

Yes, the order of the files should be correct, and I believe the file and filenames contained are formatted correctly. I have attached a compressed version of the file which contains the .txt file instructions and the bit maps themselves. They should all have a bit depth of 1 as well.

The DMD is not easily visible with how it is set up in our instrument, so I can not see what the mirrors are displaying themselves, but I can see the light reflected from them. I tried uploading the add_72.txt file, updating the LUT, pressing start and I did not see any change in the light reflected. I used “Pattern On-The-Fly Mode” with 2 second (2000000us) exposure and 1 second (1000000us) dark time. This is the same problem I had with my masks (it seems as if the DMD is not changing at all, it is essentially reflecting all light impinging on it.

The sentence referring to the timing settings means that I have used “exposure” and “dark time” values which have worked on the DMD using the “Pattern On-The-Fly Mode” and “Add Pattern” (as opposed to “Load”) to upload the bit maps.

It is very odd that the bit maps are uploaded to the LightCrafter GUI in the correct order, but they do not seem to be properly translated to the DMD. I have attached screenshots showing the files and how they are uploaded to LightCrafter.

The DMD is working properly (transitioning through the bit maps listed in the GUI with proper timing) when I use “Pattern On-The-Fly Mode” and “Add Pattern” but the problem is the bit maps are not uploaded to LightCrafter in the order I want (the order in which they are in the file).

Unfortunately, I am now experiencing a lot of problems with LightCrafter itself. The software keeps becoming unresponsive “(Not Responding)” in Windows. Also, the software is having trouble picking up the DMD even after I have reconnected the power and USB cables multiple times (this could be a problem with many USB devices linked to my one computer, I am not sure).

    Thanks for the help,

  • One note. I am not using an external trigger to change the maps currently (although it is checked in the GUI screenshot). I have the set up exactly the same for the "working" testing using "Add Pattern" to upload bit maps and the "not working" testing using "Load" to upload bit maps.

  • Hi Tristan,

Thanks for sharing files and GUI screen captures.

Looks like you are using old firmware. Please update to firmware version 5.0.1, You download from following link

I loaded the file you have shared and everything seems to be working good.

    Steps I have followed.

    1. After updating firmware, Power up the hardware, Launch Light crafter GUI.
    2. GUI connection status shows Green, Firmware version reads 5.0.1, Tag: DLPR900PROM-6500-v5.0-OOB
    3. On the DMD, internally stored Bit patterns will be shown continuously.
    4. On the GUI, Switch to pattern on the fly mode
    5. Click load button, select "Bit Map 1 (1920x1080_step10) instructions.txt" file you have shared
    6. Click select all, now all the Bit Map images on the GUI will be selected
    7. Set exposure time to 100ms (100000)
    8. Click stop
    9. Click Update LUT, Let the Bit Map images upload complete
    10. Click start
    11. Bit map images will be shown continuously on the DMD. "Sequencer Running" Check box will be set to indicate DMD is showing data.

I have followed above procedure on the DLP6500 EVM available with me and found everything working good.
Captured video is attached for reference.

You may be missing some steps. Can you please follow above steps and update the result.

    Thanks,
    Shivakumar

  • Everything is working perfectly now! Thank you for all of the help!

I believe the problem was that with the "Load" feature used to upload the bit map sequence, you must press "Select All Patterns" and when using the "Add Pattern" feature to upload the bit map sequence, all bit maps are automatically selected. I am sorry for this small oversight. Also, the updated hardware seemed to fix the connectivity issue.

    Best,

    Tristan

  • Hi Tristan,

Thanks for the confirmation. This will be helpful to other users as well.

    Thanks,
