EMAC 50MHz rreference clock

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TMS320DM8148

Hi all.

In tms320dm8148 datasheet, on pin functions table, i read that in RMII mode PIN J27 (EMAC_RMREFCLK) can be used either as input or output pin.

This means that I can connect this pin directly on my ethernet PHY and use the DM8148 as clock source?

Thanks in advance for help.

  • Yes, the DM814x can be set to source the 50Mhz to synchronize RMII or receive it.

You can connect this pin directly to the phy and use the DM814x as a clock source.

  • Hi and thanks for answering.
Now I'm designing my board with the solution that we had discuss.

I've just one another question. If I connect the PHY SMSC LAN8710A to my uC ( for example, but we can connect other PHY, I think is the same), I have to respect some critcal clock requirement such as clock stability of 50ppm, clock duty cycle of 40/60 and Jitter max of 200pS.
I can't find in DM8148's documentation the timing specification for this clock when in output from the uC.
How can I be safe that this solution works and clock timing are respected?

    Can anybody help me?

    Thank you all.

  • Andrea,

Although we do not currently have this information available in documentation form, the feedback i received from the expert is that their should not problem meeting the numbers you specified. The clock stability, jitter and duty cycle are fine.

We are still gathering more information with the goal of updating the data manual once the dust settle.

On a more practical side we have at least one other customer who successfully connected to an RMII PHY in this fashion.

    Regards,

    Benoit

  • Hi Benoit,

We have designed the 8148 board for RMII mode using Micrel KSZ8051RNL phy. But in ezsdk u-boot we not yet successful in configuring the EMAC in RMII mode. Is there any documentation is available on how to configure the EMAC in RMII mode?

    Thanks
