support USB3.0 with DM8168

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TUSB1310

Hi,

I need a USB3.0 client port,

As we know, DM8168 only support USB2.0, not 3.0.

So, I found a SATA bridge IC that could support SATA to USB3.0.

I'd like to know that if is it achievable to use this chip for fullfilling my requirement??

Does the 8168 support this topology to have USB3.0 function(no matter H/W or S/W)??

Could someone share the same design experience with DM8168??

Erick

  • Hi

DM8168 does not support USB3.0 SW/HW interface , however SATA interface is supported. Is the SATA to USB3.0. is an adaptor interfaced to USB3.0 to SATA HDD drive ?

What is the make of this adaptor and device you would like to connect.

  • Hi,

You mentioned that you found a bridge. Is the bridge SATA GEN2 compliant? If so, it should have no problem.

We have seen some SATA GEN3 targets could have problems establishing link.

That said, it is the responsibility of the Bridge developer to insure that it performs the required SATA related tasks and the SATA to USB translation should be transparent from our device perspective.

  • Hi Ravi,

We'd like to use this port as a USB client port and connect to PC.

DM8168 will work as a device such as active-sync function for microsoft windows, not for HDD drive purpose.

Due to masses of data transferring requirement, USB2.0 is not enough for us.

So, we want to upgrade it to USB3.0.

There is just a SATA to USB3.0 bridge IC(PCIe is occupied already), thus I just want to make sure it is OK in our design.

  • Hi Zegeye,

The IC has the compliance with SATA revision 2.6.

So, as you think, it should have no problem. Right ??

Because SATA interface is supported by both DM8168 and the bridge IC.

  • Hi,

Yes, I agree. SATA Rev 2.6 is GEN2 spec and if they confirm to this spec, then you should have to have NO problem.

    It should work seemlesly.

  • Hi ,

After I checked with the IC vendor, it did use to connect to HDD drive. Thus, it is also a host controller.

So, it could not be used to bridge USB3.0 from SATA since both DM8168 and the chip are host controllers.

I checked the spec and the discussion of the e2e forum again, DM8168 does not support the slave configuration of SATA interface.

So, there might be only the solution such as FPGA+TUSB1310 to achieve the USB3.0 client requirement by DM8168.

    Is there any other idea??

    Best Regards
