Regarding USB PD and TYPE C charger

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS65982, TPS25740B, PMP8920, PMP11455

Hello to all of you !

currently I am designing USB PD charger with TYPE C from scratch. during the time I have come know various Power delivery charger from different manufacturer. I've seen all of them in detail about size of modules, power rating, number of USB port they are providing. So based on that, i have come to across my designing criteria for USB PD is described below.:-

Input Voltage – 90-264 VAC

Output Specs - 20/5 V DC/A

It MUST be equipped Type-C Receptacle for Easy Charging of All New Phones, Tablets, and Notebook Computers

it must be complaint with exciting USB 2.0 and USB 3.0

Isolation required

Application - 100W Type-C PD Adapter

Required Maximum Efficiency up to 90%

Preferred topology - Flyback

It should be Compliant with Qualcomm Quick Charge

required QC3.0 Specification

Internal High-Voltage Current Source

Output Short-Circuit Protection

Output Over-Current Protection

Output Over-Voltage Protection

Dead battery Detection

So, I need a guidance from you regarding this.

Can any one tell me about selection of required IC and PD controller with reference design/SCHEMATICS??

SOME REFERENCE/SCHEMATICS FOR THIS PARTICULAR APPLICATION WITH ABOVE OUTPUT RATINGS WILL BE MORE HELPFUL.

WHAT SHOULD I KEEP IN MY MIND WHILE DESIGNING USB PD WITH 100 WATT RATING ?

SOME USEFUL LINK WILL BE HELPFUL FOR ME.

PCB space is extremely limited, the device’s goal is make it simple and cost efficient.

I already refereed TPS65982 Designs manuals, Schematic, various PD control IC and Converter IC too.

Sorry for spamming so much, I am new to E2E (first post) so I thank you very much for any resources for further reading or any contribution.

Thanks for reading,

Vivek Nirmal

  • Hi Vivek,

Give me a day and I'll connect you with the right person who can help you with this.

    Thanks,

  • Hi Vivek,

Very sorry for the delay! At a high level, since this is an adapter application, I recommend using the TPS25740B since this is capable of your 20V rail. I recommend looking at the TPS23740BEVM-741 as it is 5A capable.
The EVM as an input voltage range of 9V-16V. For you AC input, looking at our TI design library, there is a 108W PMP8920 or a 91W PMP5315 in a flyback topology that outputs within the EVM's input range.

If looking for a direct AC/DC that outputs to 20V/ 100W, I only see in our TI design library up to 60W flybacks with AC inputs (PMP11455). But hopefully this helps you with a head start on your design.

    Thanks!
    Regards,
