TPD3S014: USB 2.0 Host Protection

Part Number: TPD3S014

Dear *,

we have few questions regarding the TPD3S014, we want to use it for UAB 2.0 HS Host A type connector.

1) the TPD3S014 has integrated current limit switch with reverse current blocking

if I'm reading the datasheet right, the reverse current blocking is only active when the EN pin is low eg. device is disabled, is that right?

Is there a problem in a situation when the device is enabled and on the Vbus from the outside is greater than 5V?

2)Regarding ESD on VBUS, in the article

https://e2e.ti.com/blogs_/b/analogwire/posts/how-to-protect-usb-host-ports-with-esd-current-limit-protection-devices

it is stated

"In USB 2.0 applications, system-level ESD protection should be considered for VBUS and the data lines. VBUS requires a large capacitor for handling power transients like hot-plugging, and therefore can pass IEC 61000-4-2 by means of the capacitor."

Does this mean there is no need to additional TVS diode on the VBUS? On your demo TPD3S014EVM you use a 150uF tantalum 6.3V capacitor , can this capacitor handle ESD per IEC 61000-4-2 did you test this ?

Best Regards,

David.

  • Hi David,

    1. Correct. Disabled with reverse current blocking function.

    2. Correct. No need additional TVS.
