Good day.

Our customer would like to know the difference between the SN65HVD1050-Q1 and SN65HVD1040-Q1 and whether or not it could be considered a drop-in substitute.

    Hi Cedrick,

    Yes, these device support the same main functionality with the only difference being the feature tied to pin 8. SN65HVD1040 has a standby (STB) mode which is a very low-power where the transmitting and main receiver are turned off. A low-power receiver monitors the CAN bus for a valid dominant pulse which will wake the device (indicate on the R pin). The SN65HVD1050 instead features a Silent mode (S) for a slightly more active low-power state. In this mode, the transmitter is disabled by the receiver remains fully active, continuing to relay the state of the CAN bus to the R pin. 

    For refreshes to these devices, also consider TCAN1042 or TCAN1044A for standby more transceivers and TCAN1051 and TCAN1057 for silent mode transceivers. These newer devices have updated drivers that are capable of stable common-mode communication without the need for a SPLIT pin. They also have greater bus protection for reliability and support much higher data rates for CAN FD applications.
