RS-485

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: SN65ALS176, THVD1505, THVD1400

Hi everyone,

SN65ALS176 is declared to work properly between 4.75V and 5.25V

If I suplly the transceiver with a power supply of 4.5-5.5V, what kind of malfunction or degradation should I observe?

Even if the component is not fully characterized in this range, could I use it at 115kbps for a RS-485 half duplex?

Thank you in advance

  • When you go outside the recommended operating conditions, the electrical characteristics are no longer guaranteed, and the device might not even work correctly.

I'd guess that at normal temperatures, 0.1 Mbps will work fine, but you will not get an official statement from TI.

Anyway, the SN65ALS176 is old, expensive, wastes power, and can generate EMI due to its fast output edges. Why not use a more modern transceiver like the THVD1400 or THVD1505?
