TVS0500: How to make sure maximum clamping voltage won't damage the protective object?

Hi teams

I have few questions about select a right TVS for eFuse protection circuit. Below is a simplify SBD of my system.

The output of eFuse will power the DC-DC which have 6V maximum voltage tolenrance.

The rated input voltage level is 5V. My question is:

  1. Should TSV0500 work for 5V power rail protection? 
  2. The maximum Vclamp of TVS0500 is 9.2V base on datasheet, it will be much higher than DC-DC absorlute maximum voltage (6V). I understand this maximum voltage tolenrance is consitently DC value. I want to know how to make sure the short pulse of 9.2V transient voltage won't damage this device?

    Hi Gabriel,

    1.) Yes, TVS0500 can be used in this application since it is on the Vout side of the DC-DC. 

    2.) Most abs max ratings in IC datasheets spec for constant DC voltages (ie not transients like surges or ESD). Therefore, it usually safe to say that the device in question can handle transients slightly over the spec'd DC abs max. With that being said, there is no way to truly know what the device's transient abs max is unless you conduct additional testing. You can refer to this app note that goes into detail on the 3 main IEC transient standards we test our protection devices for. Since TVS0500 is primarily a surge protection device, IEC 61000-4-5 would be the main standard to focus on.
