SN65HVS880: Is their any digital output device with SPI, similar as SN65HVS880?

Part Number: SN65HVS880
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: SN74HCS164

Hi team,

My customer is considering SN65HVS880 for digital input application in motion controller, do you have any digital output device to recommend, just similar with SN65HVS880? Thanks.

Regards,

Xiaoying

  • Hi Xiaoying,

    To clarify -

    1. Is your customer looking for a serial to parallel converter? I.e. it takes in serial data as an input and outputs data as parallel lines. As to make a Serializer/Deserializer Combo (SERDES)

    Or

    2. Are you looking for a digital input serializer with SPI compatibility for the output?

If the answer is #1 - we don't have any part acts as a reversal of the SN65HVS880 - since this device has a high input range tolerance (up to 30V input on Field inputs) and comes out to roughly 5V logic levels. We don't have a part that can take 5V serial data and output up to 30V.

If the answer is #2 - The SN65HVS880 is SPI compatible.

However if neither of these answers is what you are looking for can you possibly share a basic block diagram showing what type of part is needed. Also I'd also recommend looking at our SERDES products as there could be some possible workaround with some of these parts (however they are focused on high speed more so than anything else so it may not be as much of a match)  or you could look for a serial in parallel out shift register that matches with your application here as essentially that is what is needed if the data needs to be deserializer. If you find a part that may be used please ask another E2E question with the part number to ensure the right team looks at the request, as currently the part you selected is in a small niche of industrial serializer that is covered by the Multiplexers team, but outside of that niche the logic team is probably the best bet or SERDES(But I don't think they will have something for this type of application)  team may have more useful suggestions/information to help finish the system at large.

    Please let me know!

  • Hi Parker,

Thanks for your insights. Actually my customer is looking for a serial to parallel converter with SPI compatible. They don't need the exact reversal of the SN65HVS880. The part they want just needs take 5V serial data to parallel output with 3.3V or 5V. They will use high side switch to convert the low voltage to 24V. And they can only accept SPI interface. Will you have any recommendation? Thanks.

  • Hi Xiaoying,

I am adding the logic team to this thread as we don't have anything in my direct product line like that - but we may have a shift register that can meet the needs of what you need.

  • Hi Xiaoying,

A standard shift register such as SN74HCS164 can be used directly with the SPI interface -- basically you just connect SCK to the CLK input of the shift register and SDO (or MOSI) to the serial data input.

There are some tutorials out on the web that I've seen, although I can't link to them here (just search for "SPI shift register"). I'm not an expert at SPI, but I believe it's SPI mode 0 that supports this directly -- the data needs to be setup before the rising edge of the clock.
