TUSB321AI: TUSB321AI with DRP and VCONN output.

Part Number: TUSB321AI
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CC2531, TUSB320LAI

Hello TI experts,

My customer considers TUSB321AI for their new product, and they have some questions whether this concept is right or not.

the concept is as below.

- the yellow box is one PCB.

- customer wants to operate CC2531(with D+, D-), temperature sensor, and PD controller/CC controller itself without adapter.

- and also wants to charge tablet PC with adapter. this adapter is 5V/2A only. no other is used.

and here is the question;

1. is it proper concept with TPS25854 or TUSB321AI?

2. we have to make IC to Dual Role Port, How can I make it? by hardware schematic or software?

3. we need VCONN 5V power when the adapter is out. can we use it directly from tablet PC when connected? or should we make specific schematic or firmware?

This is first time to use USB type C solution both me and my customer. I am sorry for this many questions.

And please let me know if you need more information about this. Thanks.

Best regards,

Chase

  • Hi Chase,

    1. Both devices can be used here in advertising 5V at 3A (max).

    2. TUSB321AI can be used for DRP mode with proper hardware configuration.

    3. Could you clarify when you need VConn power? Is the adapter being powered from VConn?

  • Hi Malik,

    Thank you for your support.

    1. customer only will use 5V/2A adapter only. how can I set CC1/CC2 pins in this case?

    2. Can you give me some reference of document about hardware configuration for DRP mode?

    3. VCONN is used for CC2531 and temperature sensor if the adapter is not present. also VCONN can give power to CC2531 and temp sensor if adapter is present, it it can. anyway main issue is when the adapter is not present, VCONN should give 5V to the modules, from tablet pc.

    Please check these issues. Thanks.

    Best regards,

    Chase

  • Hi Chase,

    1. CC current advertisement only displays max current capability. In customer application 1.5A advertisement should be configured since design can only support up to 2A.

    2.  Datasheet details how to configure TUSB321AI in DRP mode. Refer to PORT pin. https://www.ti.com/lit/ds/symlink/tusb321ai.pdf

    3. If you only intend to sink Vconn TUSB321AI is not needed. After investigating the USB-C spec, you will need a E-marker or some other device that can respond to SOP' and present/weaken Ra to get Vconn for available sources. TUSB320LAI could be used present Rp to source VBUS.
