SN751178: Difference between SN751178NSR and SN75ALS1178NSR

Part Number: SN751178
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: SN75ALS1178,

Hello Support team,

What is difference between SN751178NSR and SN75ALS1178NSR? My customer can't find SN751178NSR in market, they would like to confirm if SN75ALS1178NSR can be used as alternative.

Thanks,

Koji Ikeda

  • Hi Koji-san,

The SN75ALS1178 is characterized over a larger temperature range (-20C to 85C) than the SN751178 (0C to 70C). Because of this different characterization range, may of the specified minimum/maximum values are different between these datasheets. However, the devices are functionally the same and the pinouts are compatible. Because the device that the customer is switching to has a larger characterized range, there should be no issue swapping from the SN751178.

Let me know if you have any more questions.

    Regards,
    Eric Schott

  • Hi Koji,

I checked TI.com and SN751178NSR is currently out of stock, and looks to be unavailable from other distributors.

I compared the datasheets of the SN751178NSR and SN75ALS1178NSR datasheets and came up with the following.

ALS version is the lower power version of the SN751178NSR. ICC current draw when outputs are enabled is 35mA for the ALS version, and 80mA for non-ALS device. With lower power consumption, the abs. max voltage ranges for the receiver become narrower for the ALS version, as well as narrower operating temperature range. The ALS variant device is still RS-422/485 compliant, and is p2p compatible with the non-ALS device. SN75ALS1178NSR is can be used as an alternative as long as abs. max conditions are respected.

Please let me know if you have any more questions.

    Regards,

    Tyler
