SN65HVD234: ISO 11898-2 compliance regarding Vsym

Part Number: SN65HVD234

Are there any measurements on Vsym for this 3V3 CAN Transceiver regarding ISO 11898-2 compliance?

I know this criteria (Vsym = (Vcan_h + Vcan_l)/Vcc) cannot be fullfilled with recessive levels at 2.3 V and Vcc at 3.3 V.

But was this aspect taken into account while testing this CAN Transceiver?

  • Hi Markus,

The topic of 3.3V supplied CAN transceivers and their interoperability with ISO 11898-2 compliant 5V transceivers is a complex and ongoing discussion. Keep in mind that the ISO standard as it is today does not include 3.3V supplied transceivers, so no such device is compliant with this standard - SN65HVD234 claims to be compatible with transceivers that do conform to the 5V ISO standard.

This device's datasheet includes a section discussing the interoperability of such transceivers in section 11.3.1, including the different common-modes used by 5V and 3.3V CAN transceivers. This is directly related to the Vsym specification as the biases of these transceivers will be different from their 5V counterpart. See the datasheet section for more information and impacts of interoperability.

Let me know if there's anything you would like to go over in more detail.

    Regards,
    Eric Schott
