TUSB320: Sinking Host (using UFP)

Hi,

For this application you will need to use a PD controller to implement a DFP port with a power role swap. This will allows you a host-type data connection and the power role swap request will request 3A @ 5V power profile. TUSB320 cannot fulfil this function.

That makes sense. One question though - in PD controller, can power role be set independent of data role?
In my case I need sink for power role and UFP for data role - so my USB host can be powered from outside
over USB-C cable.
For example, will something like TPS65987DDK work or you recommend some other part/s?

Yes for most PD controllers teh power role and data role can be set independently. TPS65987DDK  does not seem to be the best fit for your design as this device is used in USB 4 applications. TPS25750D may be a better option where the power role swap can be issued over I2C from an MCU. Please let me know

One more question - while I am considering use BQ2579x series charger, in conjunction with TPS25750D.
A bit confused since both of these parts have D+/D- pins both support BC1.2 and BQ even lists USB host/ 
charging port detection, data contact detection (DCD), primary and secondary detection in BC1.2, and the 
adjustable high voltage adapter. Not sure how am I supposed to wire them up, how they'll be used? Help!!

Without having to dive deep in USB-C spec. - is there a design guide (app note/ TIDA) or ref-design using 
these two or comparable parts together, side-by-side?

Unfortunately I am not aware of such a document. USB BC 1.2 is mostly separate from the USB-C charging. You can think of the USB BC 1.2 as a back-up in the realm of type-C for legacy charging applications. The most common case where it is useful is where a USB-C to USB-A cable is used (CC wires do not traverse from power source to power sink). Having BC 1.2 in this case allows the system to still charge at a higher power than default. You should only have one BC 1.2 controller on D+/- at a time. It may be easiest to have the connection run  to  BQ2579x series charger however I am not a expert on these parts.

It helped a lot:) Almost done with my design - one question though: 

If I am not planning to supply/ source 5V back to VBUS, what's the best way to connect pins 34,35 (PP5V) and 32,33 (VBUS)?
Guess I could leave 32,33 unconnected(?), but what about 34,35? - the datasheet says, they "supply for CCy pins as VCONN"

Also, will it be possible for you/TI team member to do a review of my design schematic privately and provide feedback please?
