SN65MLVD201: SN65MLVD201DR Data rate vs cable length. 100Mbps@100Ft.

Part Number: SN65MLVD201

Hi,

We are planning to use SN65MLVD201DR based half duplex link between two boards using 100ft of shielded cat5e cable, and wondering if even possible to achieve 100Mbps of data rate using 8b/10b encoding scheme. I found signaling rate vs distance chart as under from app note but I guess I am not so sure what data rate is practical for 100ft of cable.

  • Hello Pragnesh,

This device is capable of reaching 100Mbps @ 100ft but the determining factor will be your system's tolerance to jitter. As we go higher in cable length and data rate, jitter also increases. If your jitter gets worse then your system can’t correctly sample the signal.

This app note shows examples of different percentages of jitter and a Data Rate vs Cable Length plot all using the SN65MLVD201. Given 30.4m (100ft) of cable length, at 10% of jitter the data rate will be 82Mbps while at 20% of jitter the data rate will be ~117Mbps.

    Regards,

    Josh
