Dear Team,
My customer are considering using TPD4S012 to protect USB interface like below.
Please review below schematic and let me know your opinion.
- The GND of VBUS_USB is USB_VGND but The GND of TPD4S012 is DGND , The DGND is connected to USB_VGND with bead(MPZ1608S221). I think Using same GND is more effective. please let me know your opinion.
- The customer don't use ID protection and the Pin3 of TPD4S012 is connected to USB_VGND. If they don't use this port, Which is better, floating or connecting GND? Please let me know your opinion.
Thank you.
Hi Dino,
For the unused pin I would recommend to leave it floating.
For the GND scheme, I would connect the ESD devices GND pin to the chassis GND. I believe in this case the chassis GND is DGND?
Regards,
Sebastian
Hello Sebastian,
Thank you for your comment.
I would connect the ESD devices GND pin to the chassis GND. I believe in this case the chassis GND is DGND?
Do you mean the chassis GND you mentioned is USB connect metal GND?
The GND structure is like below. DGND is main GND of this board where USB to UART bridge IC and processor.
Thank you.
Hi Dino,
We typically recommend connecting the ESD diode GND to a GND plane connected to a metal Chassis screw or a connector. In this case if there is no chassis screw I would recommend using the same GND as the connector.

Sebastian
