THVD1452: THVD1452 can be replaced with SN65HVD33/SN75LBC180/THVD1552

Hi team,

Customer considers to replace each RS485 device below with THVD1452, because THVD1452 can support 3.3V/5V.  In general, are ther any concerns?

SN65HVD33 with supply voltage = 3.3V

SN75LBC180 with supply voltage = 5V

THVD1552 with supply voltage = 5V

  • Hi Noriyuki-san,

    This should be okay as the THVD1452 can operate in all these conditions, but there are a couple things to be aware of:

    1. If a passive fail-safe (biasing resistors) are used in the system their values may need to change slightly as the THVD1452 has the highest input impedance so depending on bus loading these values may need to change to get the same amount of noise margin - but this shouldn't be a major change.

    2. The THVD1452 is faster than the LBC180 and HVD33 - so while the THVD1452 can transmit at a lower speed than its max - its transition time is going to be faster which could create more high frequency energy that could lead to more EMC/EMI issues. If the systems are terminated and have a proper network topology (point to point for two devices, daisy chain preferred otherwise) with proper impedance matching it shouldn't cause too many issues but it is something that should be considered.
