TPD6S300A: USB-type C Alternate mode (Display Port) possible?

Hello team,

My customer is considering TPS65994AE for USB type-C, and they are going to use Alternate Mode for Display Port.

TPD6S300A is used in TPS65994QFNEVM, and recommended in Datasheet.

Is it possible to use alternate mode (Display port) with TPD6S300A?

I am not sure about the data rate required for Display port, is it 10Gbps? I am afraid TPD6S300A might have too big IO capacitance.

Hi Kuwahara-san,

The TPD6S300A will provide protection for the CC lines, SBU lines, and optional USB2.0 D+/D- lines. Only the SBU lines are used for DP alternate mode but the SBU lines do not transmit video data. Instead, the SBU lines are used for DP link training and other handshaking functions.

With this in mind, the TPD6S300A can be used in systems that support Display Port and the TPD6S300A will not impact DP functionality.

Thank you for your quick answer.

In that case, I am intereseted in TPD6E05U06 because it is cheaper, however it doesn't have short to VBUS protection.

What will happen if TPD6E05U06 is shorted to VBUS 20V, will it overheat?

Kuwahara-san,

TPD6E05U06 is not a replacement for TPD6S300A. Each chip is designed to protect different pins on the USB-C connector. You cannot replace one with the other. TPD6S300A is for protecting CC, SBU, and D+/D- pins. TPD6E05U06 looks to be for the SSTX/RX pins.
