Hi Team,

I was looking for a TIA/EIA-899 M-LVDS( multipoint-LVDS) transceiver for my design. I was going through the below product selection page.

In the protocol filter section, there are options like LVDS,M-LVDS, LVDM. what does LVDM refers here? Unfortunately I couldn't find any transceiver for TIA/EIA-899 M-LVDS standard in Automotive part.

When I was looking in LVDM protocol, I came across this product SN65LVDM050-Q1(was also suggested by customer). In the datasheet, I couldn't find this product is TIA/EIA-899 M-LVDS compatible. But in the technical documentation section of the product sheet, it point outs to M-LVDS as shown below

My questions are:

1. What is the difference in LVDM and M-LVDS in your product selection page refers to? ( As I gone through, the LVDM products are a LVDS transceivers)

2. Does the product SN65LVDM050-Q1/SN65LVDM051-Q1 supports TIA/EIA-899 M-LVDS?

3. Is there any TIA/EIA-899 M-LVDS transceivers in the automotive part (AEC-Q qualified) from TI ? Please suggest.

It would be great if I get an inputs from you at the earliest.

Hey Kiran,

1. At a high level, LVDM is TI's spin on LVDS that allows the driver's output current to be 2x higher (6mA) over the standard LVDS (2.5-4.5mA). LVDM devices can also be used for M-LVDS applications (under lightly loaded backplane conditions).

2 & 3. Both the SN65LVDM050 and the SN65LVDM051 will not support M-LVDS in backplane applications. Furthermore, TI does not have any AEC-Q100 rated TIA/EIA-899 M-LVDS devices.

Thanks for your quick reply.

My application is to have a M-LVDS transceivers communicating over a bus (twisted pair cable) about a 20 meter apart. Do you have any suggested part from LVDM category with AEC-Q100 qualified?

Hey Kiran,

The only automotive LVDM parts would be the LVDM050Q1 and LVDM051Q1 as you mentioned. It can work with M-LVDS but note that it does not have as much drive current as the M-LVDS counterparts (6mA compared to 12mA), which can be problematic with the 20m as it will introduce more jitter.
