SN65C1168: Deference between SN65C1168 and SN65C1168E

Part Number: SN65C1168

Hi Team

I have 2 questions regarding SN65C1168 and SN65C1168E.

1, What is the deference of ESD protection spec? I'd like to confirm this because we couldn't find "ESD Protection for RS-422 Bus Pins" at the datasheet of SN65C1168.

2, SN65C1168 has a diode between Vcc and Input pin but  SN65C1168E doesn't has this. Why?

<SN65C1168>

<SN65C1168E>

  • 1. Apparently, the SN65C1168 does not have any guaranteed ESD specifications, so I guess it failed all test levels.

    2. In the SN65C1168E, the diode from GND is not a plain diode but an ESD protection circuit that can handle both positive and negative voltages.

  • Hi Yajima-san,

    1. The "E" version has +/-8-kV IEC ESD Protection - whereas the non-E version does not.

    2. The device uses a different protection scheme. That is all.

    Best,
