DP83848K: How to stop the operation to reduce power consumption when not in use

Part Number: DP83848K

Hi team,

Customer considers using DP83848K for their new product and has below questions. Could you answer the following?

  • To reduce power consumption, customer would like to STOP operation when not in use -> is it okay to set the reset unresolved? (/RESET_N is LOW)
  • And how much current will be consumed at that time? (rough estimate is fine).
  • Is there any other way to stop the DP83848K operation?
  • Is there any problem if DP83848K operation is stopped during Ethernet communication?

Your support is highly appreciated.

  • Hi Yuto!

I'm glad to hear that the customer is considering the DP83848K. Could I ask what features led them to the DP83848? What requirements are they looking for in an Ethernet PHY?

Below I answered your questions, but I also want to ask a System level question.

How is the Board determining when the PHY is needed or not?

    • If there is no traffic on the ethernet port, turn off. But once the PHY is 'off' how will the board know when more traffic is coming along the wire?

    • To reduce power consumption, customer would like to STOP operation when not in use -> is it okay to set the reset unresolved? (/RESET_N is LOW)
      • It is completely fine to keep the 848 under RESET while not in use. However how would the board know when to release the PHY from RESET (no packets from Link partner will be received while PHY is in RESET).
    • And how much current will be consumed at that time? (rough estimate is fine).
      • This is an older part and we don't have readily available data for this. We do have an EVM available where you can make the measurement.
    • Is there any other way to stop the DP83848K operation?
      • No, the 848 doesn't have any low power modes.
    • Is there any problem if DP83848K operation is stopped during Ethernet communication?
      • The main problem would be losing packets/data. If the PHY is put into RESET during Communication, any packets on the wire will be lost. Whether or not this is a problem is application specific and would be up to the System Engineer to decide.

  • Hi Alvaro,

Thank you for answering. I answered customers question and am asking your questions to them.

The main reason that customer chose DP83848K is they had used this device before. Do you have any newer alternative or reccomended device for this?

    Best regards,

    Yuto

  • Hi Yuto,

I would recommend the DP83826. It is another 10/100 Mbps Ethernet PHY with more features for reducing power consumption (EEE, Low Power, and WoL).

    Regards,

    Alvaro
