SN65HVD232: Moving to the TCAN3414

Hi Team,

A few questions regarding the new TCAN3414 as I'm considering moving away from the SN65HVD232.

  • Is this pinout and functionally compatible with the SN65HVD232?
  • Current design has pins 5 and 8 floating right now on the SN65HVD232.
  • It looks like the TCAN3414 will be in standby with pin 8 floating, and needs to be grounded. Can I ground pin 8 on the SN65HVD232, even though the datasheet says “No Connect”?
  • It looks like floating pin 5 on the TCAN3414 is fine, as it will keep itself enabled with the internal pull-down resistor. Can you confirm?

    1. Unfortunately they have different pin-out. TCAN3414 has STB on pin 8 for standby mode control, and SHDN on pin 5 for low-power shutdown mode control. SN65HVD232 has NC on both pin 8 and 5.

    2. It's OK to left pin 5 and 8 floating on TCAN3414, there are internal pull-up integrated.

    3. NC means those pins are not internally connected to the die, so it doesn't matter you tie to GND or left floating.

    If STB and SHDN (pins 5 and 8) are properly handled, are they otherwise drop in compatible?
    I want to make sure I’m not missing any other compatibility issue.

    1. It's OK to left pin 5 and 8 floating on TCAN3414, there are internal pull-up integrated.

    On page 17 of the datasheet, it says:

    “STB pin has default pull-up resistor on-chip. So if the pin is left floating or pulled high externally, device is in standby mode.”

    This is conflicting information with what you said.

    Also, to clarify, the datasheet states on page 3 that “Device in ultra-low power shutdown mode if pin is high; integrated pull-down

    So floating pin 5 appears to be fine, though technically it is relying on an integrated pull-down resistor rather than pull-up.

    1. NC means those pins are not internally connected to the die, so it doesn't matter you tie to GND or left floating.

    I was concerned about the SN65HVD232, as sometimes “No Connect” means it must not be connected to anything.

    Other times, “No Connect” means it is not internally connected and it doesn’t matter if it is externally connected.

    1. Yes, SHDN can be left floating but STB needs be tied to GND, if the intention is to only use normal mode like SN65HVD232.

    2. If both pins are left floating, it's in standby mode. If only SHDN left floating and STB pulled down, it's in normal mode.

    3. NC means not internally connected.
