MAX232E: Failure Condition

Part Number: MAX232E

Tool/software:

HI team,

Customer ask a situation when VS+ /VS- are not recoomended condition by accident.

Q1: When VS+ or V2- are open, what does it happens?

Q2: When a GND which VS+ / VS- connected thru 1uF become floating, what does it happens? The condition is equivalent to VS+ and VS- are connected thru series 1uF caps.

Actually, customer can communication in the Q2 situation, but wants to know how it affect.

Regards,

Hayashi

  • Hi Hayashi,

Today is a US holiday. Please help give some time for expert feedback, thanks.

    Best Regards,

    Michael.

  • The capacitors at V+ and V− are needed as storage for the charge pumps. Without them, the output bus voltages cannot be generated.

When the ground between them is floating, then it will end up somewhere in the middle between the outputs of the two charge pumps, depending on their strength. It will be approximately correct, but there is no guarantee that the output voltages will actually be correct.
