DP83640: maximum allowed current into TD+/- and RD+/- pins

Part Number: DP83640

Tool/software:

Hi TI,

I have a design with DP83640 that is supposed to operate in challenging conditions. I need to know what is the maximal current intensity into any of TD+, TD-, RD+, RD- pins that is still not destructive for the part.
The datasheet doesn't specify that, but I need to know this value to design good protection against transients.

Can you, please, provide the needed information?

Best regards,
Adam

  • Hi Adam,

Please note that DP83640 is an older device and has very limited support. We would recommend upgrading towards our DP8382x family of PHYs.

Based on the current documentation, the device should operate fine so long as the appropriate circuitry is placed for the MDI. Regarding transients like ESD, these waveforms take a very specific shape, which the PHY can detect and block out up to 8kV for HBM and 1kV for CBM. Otherwise, please ensure that normal active voltages do not exceed [-0.5, VCC+0.5].

    Sincerely,

    Gerome

  • Dear Gerome,

    thank you for your answer.
If DP83640 is "older" and not really supported, this might be mentioned on the website, which, instead, clearly declares this part to be "active".

In this case I am not interested in ESD. I have to prevent damage by "events" which are propagating over the signal path (are not blocked by the trafo). To keep the voltage within the limits I have to know what current is destructive.

I haven't found the information I need in datasheets for other parts either (DP8382x). Is such information available for any part?

    Best regards,
    Adam

  • Hi Adam,

Regarding damage by events, this is categorized in Volts as the Absolute Max for the device instead of Amps. For example, DP83822 has a limit of [-0.5, 3.8] V.

    Sincerely,

    Gerome
