SN65HVS883: SN65HVS883 – Is it safe to leave RE0–RE7 unconnected (unused)?

Part Number: SN65HVS883

Tool/software:

Hi everyone,

I'm working with the SN65HVS883 digital input serializer from TI, and I have a question about the RE0–RE7 pins.

I understand that these pins are intended to drive external status LEDs with a constant current sink (around 3 mA typical, depending on RLIM). The datasheet provides good information on this use case (e.g., Section 8.3.1 and Table 6.5), and I've seen example circuits where LEDs are connected between 5 V and RE pins to visualize input status.

However, I do not need status LEDs in my design, so my question is:

Is it safe to leave the RE0–RE7 pins completely unconnected? Or should i implement a resistor in series? (see picture below)

There is no explicit statement in the datasheet about this. But I assume leaving them floating simply results in no current flow — and no unintended side effects. Would you agree?

Has anyone else left these pins unconnected in a production system without issues?

Any insight or confirmation from TI or other experienced designers would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!
