SN65LVDS93: Using 3-channel in 4-channel serialiser

Tool/software:

We are going to use sn65lvds93dgg in our design. Our plan is to use 3-channel only instead of 4-channel. Can we use it. Do we need to terminate inputs by pull-up and also any registers need to configured and what frequency needs to be used for 3-channel.

Planning to use Serdes transmitter sn65lvds93dgg for display applications. Will there be any advantages/benefits if we go for 4-channel instead of 3-channel.

Hi Arun,

Using 3-channel supports less power consumption, whereas having 4-channel supports better resolution.
Since you are planning to use it for display applications, the recommendation would be to check the display resolution requirements.

Can you please provide your display specifications for more accurate recommendation?

My first question is, can we use 4-channel LVDS transmitter as 3-channel LVDS transmitter. If yes, do we need to terminate inputs or can be configured in processor as pull down or pull up. waiting for your reply.

Another is regarding the 4-channel benefits. Our display specs are 10.4” SVGA LCD panel with LED backlight. LCD supports 800 x 600 SVGA mode and can display 16.7M/262k colors.

Hi Arun,

1. Yes, you can use it as a 3-channel device. The unused bits should be left open.
For more information based on the type of connection, please refer to the AN-1108 Channel-Link PCB and Interconnect Design-In Guidelines (Rev. A) document.

2. Based on your display configuration, it is recommended to use 4-channel as 16.7M colors means 24-bits per pixel of color, whereas for 262k it is 18-bits per pixel of color.
Also, 3-channel will only provide 21-bits of data bits.
