I'm looking for the unencrypted spice model for the tvs3301 diode. Would like to use it in a simulation for an ESD protection circuit that I'm working on.

Also, I am testing to 61000-4-2 HBM (150pF, 330 ohm) with the cap charged to 15,999 volts. I see that the TVS3301 says it's rated up to 30kV for this standard for both direct contact and air discharge. I would then assume that for my test this device alone would be adequate to absorb the energy and clamp the voltage spike. I would think that an extra resistor to absorb any of the excess energy would not be needed. Is my understanding correct ?

Hi Joseph,

This device is rated for +/-8kV contact discharge per IEC 61000-4-2 and +/-15kV air-gap discharge. I would not exceed these ratings since we can't gaurantee the device wouldn't be damaged

If you're testing to higher IEC ESD levels I would choose a diode with a higher rating like TSM36CA-Q1. There is a spice model available on the product page.

The spice model on the page is encrypted. I am looking for a model that is unencrypted and will work with TINA. Please advice.

I was able to open the TSM36CA-Q1 lib file... it is unencrypted. If you are referring to the TVS3301 model I can look into providing this, but the simulation won't reflect the actual device characteristics. If you apply 16kV IEC ESD airgap or contact discharge you are going to damage the device.

Sorry I was mistaken. The highest possible voltage level will be 15kV.

Yes if you could provide the unencrypted model that would be much appreciated. If I'm simulating at a lower voltage (i.e. 15kV) will it more accurately reflect the true behavior of the device ?

Hi Joseph,

Attached is the TVS3301 model. TVS3301 Spice Model.

My point was TVS diode spice models will clamp any transient even if it would violate the actual devices charcteristics in terms of peak current/power capability.

Thank you for sharing that. I'm seeing voltage spikes close to 60v for around 8us. Peak power around 2.7kw. cap discharged at 15kV. This is being used to protect an xtr106, in your opinion would this voltage spike damage the IC ? Here is a snip of my spice circuit and results. Let me know your thoughts.

Hi Joseph,

Are you trying to model an IEC61000-4-2 strike? The waveform should look closer to the snippet below:

The voltage spike only briefly goes above the abs max of the XTR106 (40V), so it's possible it can protect the circuit. I always recommend conducting actual transient testing since spice modeling is not fully accurate to a PCB level test where parisitics from other components will affect clamping performance.
