Hi team,

I have a customer with the below question. Let me know what you think, thanks in advance!

"Can the IC operate with VBUS = 5V/20V ?

According to the datasheet, absolute maximum rating on this pin is 20V. Is it rather to prevent against potential surges?

The reason behind our inquiry is we want to see if it can be compatible with a USB-C interface VBUS."

Hi Marco:

Type-C voltage could be upto 24V or more, please use voltage divider to lower <20v.

Customer feedback below:

"Thanks for the feedback. Are you sure type-C with VBUS > 5V & < 20V is really compatible with this chip? I believe it is not recommended by the datasheet to operate with VBUS > 5V given that it rather seems designed for USB2.0 applications (see below):

Can you verify and make sure it is safe?"

Hi Marco:

Sorry for confusion. TUSB1210 Vbus pin can tolerate up to 20V without damaged device. But for functional test, it's designed to meet USB2 spec with 5V.

So as we presumed initially, the 20V rating is just an absolute maximum value to handle surges on the pin & during normal operation, the chip expects 5V VBUS (+/- tolerance)"
