TDES960: Synchronous Mode

Part Number: TDES960
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TSER953

Hi All,

I have a question about TDES960 Synchronous Mode.

Customer is using TSER953 and TDES960, and the TSER953 is set to Synchronous Mode and the TDES960 to Non-Synchronous Mode.
No external clock is input to the TSER953.

(1) It works without any particular problems, but do I need to set the TDES960 to Synchronous Mode?
(2) Please tell me what problems may arise if the TSER953 is set to Synchronous Mode and the TDES960 to Non-Synchronous Mode.

Best Regards,
Ishiwata

  • Hello Ishiwata-san,

Yes, it is recommended to have both devices set into the same mode.

    (2) Please tell me what problems may arise if the TSER953 is set to Synchronous Mode and the TDES960 to Non-Synchronous Mode.

You may have at least Back-channel communications issues, due to the different speeds used in the different Modes.

Also, when the SER is running in Synch mode it will be expecting the REFCLK via the back-channel, if this does not come the device will start using the internal CLK but it is not programmed to use it. So, you may have forward channel stability issues as well.

You can easily set the DES into the Synch Mode by writing DES reg 0x58[2:0] = 110
